With over 20 years as an educator, I was a classroom teacher for over 13 years. Most of my classroom experience has been spent in grades 3-4. My master's degree is in Literacy and Curriculum and Instruction. As an IDA Certified Dyslexia Specialist and a Certified Orton-Gillingham teacher, (AOGPE) I use the Orton-Gillingham approach, while working with struggling readers and dyslexic learners.
I believe being fair doesn't always mean doing the same for everybody. All children can learn in a compassionate, understanding and safe environment. I believe children need direct, explicit instruction. This is particularly true for the struggling reader. My Orton Gillingham training (IMSLEC and AOGPE) gave me a deeper understanding of reading disabilities and how to help a child truly become a reader.
